Though he is perhaps best known for his brief and violent tenure as bass player for the influential Black Metal outfit Mayhem, Varg Vikernes (aka Count Grishnackh) has released a wealth of fascinating material under the moniker Burzum. While Burzum’s earlier records are outstanding if somewhat typical examples of Black Metal, 1994’s HVIS LYSET TAR OSS saw Vikernes exploring the unsettling synthetic textures and brooding ambient atmospheres that have characterized almost all of Burzum’s subsequent releases.
