By blending Hindu prayers with Western harmonies and instruments, Long Island-born singer Krishna Das became the Bruce Springsteen of the kirtan devotional style he absorbed during a long India sojourn. Throughout the album, Das chants the Hindu names of God in his soothing baritone voice, accompanied by tabla, violin, harmonium, electric guitar and a backing choir. Epic tracks like "Sundhara Chalisa" build slowly from spare beginnings to deeply moving call-and-response climaxes.
