Antidote

beabadoobee’s at the top of the Antidote this week with “Take a Bite”, the first song to drop from her just-announced third album, This Is How Tomorrow Moves, due on 16 August. It’s a bold exercise in introspection set to a beguiling chime of guitars and pulse of piano. “I wanted to write a song about being self-aware of my own faults,” the singer-songwriter tells Apple Music. “I’m so used to blaming my actions on other people and ‘Take a Bite’ is so much more insular. It’s the first time I talk about myself and my own perspective rather than others. I chose this song to start the next era as it encapsulates the idea of finding comfort in a familiar place. It talks about the temptation of indulging in chaotic things in life and the awareness of it—and that’s the first step of getting over it. Also, it sounds really sexy!” “Take a Bite” was recorded with Rick Rubin at his Shangri-La studio in Malibu, where the storied producer has worked on records by Adele, Metallica, Lana Del Rey, Eminem and Ed Sheeran among many others—but beabadoobee originally took a little convincing of the song’s worth. “ I hated it and then Jacob [Budgen, guitarist, producer and long-time collaborator] made a demo and I fell in love with it,” she says. “Introducing the piano into my songs and then continuing that across the album was also a big moment while making it. Watching Carla [Azar] from one of my favourite bands, Autolux, play the drums on it at Shangri-La was easily one of my favourite moments!” Elsewhere this week, you can hear essential new music from CMAT and Cassyette. Like all the artists featured, Antidote is always evolving—so keep checking back, and if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
