Amsterdam's a balladeer is the project of singer/songwriter Marinus de Goederen and drummer Tijs Stehmann, whose independently released debut EP set the stage for their 2006 breakout album Panama. Their accomplished and catchy take on indie pop combines De Goederen's warm vocals and sensitive lyrics with spectral guitar sounds. A balladeer's hit “Swim with Sam” is an acoustic ballad framed by soft piano and mellow guitars, but heavier grunge influences often come to the fore, as in “Fortune Teller” and “Summer”, with pulsating bass and guitars that evolve to a powerful climax.
