Study of the Invisible

Study of the Invisible

Vanessa Wagner opens up a world of beautiful contemporary piano pieces, most of which undeservedly sit on the fringes of concert programmes. But this is thrilling music, and Wagner’s album ranges over the gamut of styles. The late Harold Budd’s ambient “La Casa Bruja” follows an impressionistic depiction of rain by electronic music pioneer Suzanne Ciani. Elsewhere, Wagner showcases music by some of today’s brightest young composing talents, including Caroline Shaw, David Lang and Nico Muhly. Ezio Bosso’s hypnotic, pulsating “Before 6” is a masterclass in restraint, while two of Philip Glass’ most iconic piano études bring a minimalist flavour to this enticing album. Wagner guides us on her imaginative and rewarding journey with playing of great depth and subtlety.
