Some voices do one thing extremely well, but Maurane's deep, expressive tone can wring the emotion out of any melody, in any context, and she likes to put herself to the test. Having been raised on musical theatre and the pastoral melodies of Bach and Debussy, she's equally at home with brassy cocktail jazz (the swinging “Armstrong”), blistering soul rock (“Différente quand je chante”), sober piano laments (“Sur un prélude de Bach”), sparkling folk (“Au clair de ma plume”) or any number of tormented power ballads.
