Machine Gun Kelly is the king of genre fluidity. That’s largely due to diverse musical tastes: growing up, the Cleveland native loved hip-hop icons DMX, 50 Cent and Eminem as much as he admired rockers such as blink-182 and Limp Bizkit. So although MGK initially found success as a swaggering rapper with straight-shooting flow and gritty lyrics, his career has since become much more eclectic. He’s dabbled in earnest, moody emo songs that bring to mind the glory days of Warped Tour; held his own spitting bars with hip-hop A-listers, and been the tough-but-tender romantic foil to pop stars.
