Lube, who hail from the Moscow suburb of Lyubertsy (hence their name), craft an intoxicating sound that draws on Russia's patriotic musical heritage. Primary songwriter Igor Matvienko has spent the last quarter of a century incorporating aspects of traditional folk, rock and military anthems into singularly unique songs. Accompanied by Matvienko's brooding vocals, the music reflects a nationalism that looks on the days of Soviet-era Russia with pride—one of the reasons they can lay claim to being Vladimir Putin's favourite band.
