Linda May Han Oh: Visionary Women

“When I was asked to curate this playlist, I knew I had to include 'Four Women',” Linda May Han Oh says about the Nina Simone slow burner, which tells the story of four Black women confronting racial stereotypes. The bassist/composer is so smitten by the jazz icon's 1966 track that she also included Meshell Ndegeocello's spellbinding cover for her International Women’s Day playlist, represented here alongside artists like Patricia Brennan, Joni Mitchell and pianist Geri Allen—whom she considers a mentor and inspiration. “Of all of her works, 'LWB’s House (The Remix)' from the album The Life of a Song is one of my favourites with its relentless groove, angular melodies and daring improvisation,” she says. “It makes you feel like the music truly lives and breathes.”
