About The Host

The Host is an alias of Irish electronic musician Barry Lynn, who became known in the mid-2000s for his releases on Planet Mu as Boxcutter. These recordings blended jagged breakbeats and glitches with heavy sub-bass. By the time of Boxcutter's fourth album, The Dissolve (2011), his sound had smoothed out a bit, embracing vintage synth-funk and disco influences, and dipping into tape-damaged chillwave. In 2012, Lynn debuted the Host with a self-titled album, embracing the frenetic rhythms of footwork while glancing back at '90s cyberspace. Following this album, Lynn continued releasing EPs as Boxcutter, exploring the ground between juke, U.K. garage, drum'n'bass, and IDM, but he revisited the Host in 2015 with Esalen Lectures and the Audience Science EP. ~ Paul Simpson
