About The Bureau
Formed in late 1980, the Bureau was a high-powered UK octet, several of whose personnel had defected from Dexys Midnight Runners. The line-up comprised Archie Brown (vocals), Pete Williams (bass/vocals), Geoff ‘JB’ Blythe (tenor saxophone), Steve Spooner (alto saxophone), Paul Taylor (trombone), Robert Jones (guitar/trumpet/vocals), Mick Talbot (b. 11 September 1958, London, England; keyboards/vocals) and Andy Growcott (percussion). The band was soon signed to Warner Brothers Records and, for a time, looked likely to rival Dexys Midnight Runners as a live attraction. Brown’s vocals, backed by a superbly excited brass backing, were in evidence on their first single, ‘Only For Sheep’. The excellent ‘Let Him Have It’, a Brown lyric written about the infamous Bentley/Craig murder case, sadly missed the charts, and despite a series of highly acclaimed live shows, the group disbanded. An album, originally intended for UK release, was cancelled and only appeared briefly abroad. It was reissued in expanded form in 2005.
