DJ-Kicks: Playgroup (DJ Mix)

Playgroup’s Trevor Jackson came bounding into the new millennium with “Make It Happen” and “Number One”, a pair of singles fusing funk, punk and disco that were instantly ubiquitous on discerning dance floors worldwide. The UK DJ followed up in 2002 with an eye-opening DJ-Kicks mix whose far-reaching track selection doubled as a history lesson and record-store guide for curious electroclash clubbers. With online streaming still years away, a set that zigzagged through avant-funk (Bill Laswell’s Material), vintage electro (an obscure 1985 cover of Strafe’s “Set It Off”), hip-house (KC Flightt’s “Let’s Get Jazzy”), New Wave (The Human League) and dubby post-punk (Flying Lizards’ “Money B”) wasn’t just novel; it was practically a public service. Looking back from today’s perspective, Jackson’s sly, groove-filled mix also makes for a great snapshot of the era’s indie-dance fusions: The toe-scuffing drum machines and slippery synths of Metro Area, Zongamin and Smith N Hack haven’t lost one iota of their upstart spirit.
