The Chieftains: Influences

The Chieftains: Influences

As Ireland's preeminent traditional music group, The Chieftains draw on 300 years of sounds and ideas. With The Clancy Brothers' lively revivalism paving the way ("Mountain Dew"), The Chieftains' founders got their start in Ceoltóirí Chualann ("An Long Faoi Lán Seoil"), resurrecting the 19th-century bodhran drum for their joyful, jig-worthy tunes. Their classical tinge looks back even further, to songs like the lilting, lyrical "Fanny Power", by 18th-century harpist Turlough O'Carolan.
