Shoes Essentials

Though tethered spiritually to the ‘60s British Invasion, Illinois quartet Shoes boasted the sort of punchy songcraft and DIY resourcefulness that made them unlikely allies of the late-'70s punk explosion. The radiant, ringing chords of initial singles like “Tomorrow Night” form the missing link between The Beatles and early R.E.M., while the vacuum-sealed fuzz and woozy melodies of “Boys Don't Lie” anticipate the home-recording haziness of ‘90s indie rock. And though Shoes never quite transcended cult status, it wasn't for a lack of trying: With “Will You Spin for Me?”, the band effortlessly updated their power pop to ‘80s-synth standards.
