Sheila Essentials

The chanteuse born Annie Chancel was France's poster girl for pre-flower-power pop. Groomed for stardom at the age of 16, Sheila personified the carefree innocence of the early '60s on her countrified school's-out anthem “L'Ecole Est Finie” and a string-swept cover of Cher's “Bang Bang”. But in the ‘70s, Sheila transitioned from teen idol into adult-oriented music: Rebranding herself Sheila B Devotion, she scored a string of ecstatic orchestro-disco hits under the aegis of American groove-masters Chic, including the Anglo-crossover smash “Spacer”.
