Selects: Subjective (Goldie & James Davidson)

The thrust of Goldie and James Davidson’s Subjective project has always been to venture outside of drum ’n’ bass, the genre in which they built their names (Goldie as one of its original pioneers; Davidson as one half of the duo Ulterior Motive). “Of course, we are massive D’n’B heads, but the whole Subjective aspect was looking at different angles of the music,” Goldie tells Apple Music. Their recent album The Start of No Regret takes a more genre-spanning approach, taking in atmospheric ambient, soul, R&B, breaks, house and even a little bit of pop. So does their Selects set—in which DJs and producers showcase their favourite tracks of any given moment—which compiles some of the songs that informed making the album. “It’s a mixture of what we like to play at shows and what inspires us in the studio,” Goldie says. It also serves to explicitly connect Subjective’s tunes to their influences. “We always wanted to do a track with the drums in the style of ‘Reckoner’, and you can hear that in ‘Lost’,” he says of Radiohead’s impact.
