Born in 1953 in Brooklyn, New York, Benatar began her musical studies in the field of opera, but dropped out of university at 19. After working in nightclubs, off-Broadway plays and recording jingles, Benatar was signed to Chrysalis Records and released her first album, In the Heat of the Night, in 1979.
