Norwegian future jazz pioneer Nils Petter Molvær, a.k.a. NPM, studied jazz in Trondheim before releasing his successful solo debut, Khmer, in 1997. The trumpeter, composer and producer's fluid sound delves into rock and hip-hop with a groove-led approach. Samples are used to create spaced-out beds of sound for his melodic trumpet improvisations, and dramatic moods are often heightened with electronic manipulation. Molvær's versatility has also led him down the avenue of film scores—his contribution to 2005's Edy stood out with its haunting techno.
