Italian-born actor Lino Ventura cut a commanding figure in French films, and his hard-boiled presence was served by a clutch of atmospheric scores. Miles Davis leaves his mark on film noir with a bracing performance. Ennio Morricone makes suitably light work of a criminal clan, and François de Roubaix's limber instrumentals, by turns dark and playful, zigzag their way through the underworld.
