Emerging from the streets of Paris in the latter half of the ‘80s, Les Négresses Vertes brought the spirit of the underground scene to mainstream dance floors. Their 1988 debut Mlah introduced a self-taught troupe, eager to add inspirations from their diverse backgrounds—interweaving punk idiosyncrasies, vaudeville theatricality, caressed accordions, fiery brass, Latin guitars, Algerian and ska flavours in a genre-bending fiesta. With French chanson always lurking around the corner, this list includes the collective's later efforts with smart, bass-heavy beats.
