As a collective, La Cliqua was short-lived, but their influence on global hip-hop is immeasurable. The loosely affiliated group of graffiti artists, DJs and MCs formed in the Paris suburbs in the early '90s. Featuring legendary MCs Rocca, Daddy Lord C and Kohndo, their debut LP Designed to Last set a new standard for French gangsta rap with boom-bap beats, cinematic samples and fearless, occasionally violent rhymes that illustrated the life on Paris's urban streets. Suddenly, a vibrant, distinctly French hip-hop sound was on the map, and the world was listening.
