In the pantheon of bebop and hard-bop trumpeters, the underrated Kenny Dorham was a hugely respected musician in the ranks with Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard. Dorham played with countless greats and put together meticulously curated, highly successful groups of his own. His cool tone shines in tracks like the understated “Lotus Flower” and the swinging “Blue Spring,” which features a smoking guest turn from Cannonball Adderley. Whatever the character of the tunes—Latin-flavoured (“Una Mas”), rhythmically intricate Afro-Cuban (“Afrodisia”), or straight ahead (“Why Do I Love You?”)—Dorham was a true force.
