Kenji Sawada Essentials

Kenji Sawada Essentials

As Japan's answer to David Bowie, pop icon and fashion iconoclast Kenji Sawada, a.k.a. Julie, knew how to subvert expectations. After fronting Group Sounds band The Tigers in the '60s and supergroup PYG in 1971, Sawada become a major solo artist in the late ‘70s with extravagant rock hits made all the more memorable by his androgynous flair. His repertoire brims with emotional ballads and glam, retro-tinged rock 'n' roll like "Casablanca Dandy". Highlights from Sawada's back catalogue include the wailing guitar ballad "Tokino Sugiyuku Mamani" and the ‘80s guitar-and-synth smash "Tokio".
