Johnny Winter Essentials

Singer/guitarist Johnny Winter dragged the sweaty, stomping machismo unique to the Texas blues tradition into hard rock's post-Jimi Hendrix era. Along with his younger brother Edgar, the roadhouse veteran laid down some of the toughest sides of the '70s, including the lustful “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” and beloved standard “Rock Me Baby”, both of which smash up howled boasts and deliriously high-pitched fret-work with thumping bass runs and booming drums. Even when Winter unplugs on mid-'80s delight “Evil On My Mind”, the sheer visceral intensity of his playing comes out in every bended note and jerk of the slide.
