French-Martinican rapper Joeystarr is a celebrated artist in the ranks of European gangsta rap. After a troubled childhood he was saved by hip-hop, becoming part of the successful group NTM in the ‘90s before embarking on a solo career with his 2006 debut La Dernière Année. Known for his growling voice, provocative lyrics and intense delivery, Joeystarr puts out pounding beats that are often inspired by some unexpected sources; “L'arène” from 2015's Caribbean Dandee, released with rapper Nathy, is a party hit with island grooves that samples Edith Piaf.
