Gomez are revolutionary British traditionalists, upgrading banjo-taut Americana with lo-fi drum machines and the authentically Delta-scuffed holler of Ben Ottewell, as well as the whispery vocals of Tom Gray and Ian Ball. It’s a rowdy fusion of sounds and styles: their post-millennial patchwork is made of many different musical fragments, allowing them to try on the homemade funk of “Whippin’ Piccadilly”, the indie-rock swagger of “Girlshapedlovedrug” and the languid folk-soul of “Revolutionary Kind” like a series of immaculately made secondhand suits.
