Gang of Four Essentials

Gang of Four's punk-funk fusion wasn't just a means to bring some groove to the pogo pit, but to interrogate how consumerism infects modern life. Their 1979 debut, Entertainment!, renders relationships in terms of business transactions (“At Home He's a Tourist”) and faulty merchandise (“Damaged Goods”), and while their spiky sound had turned glossier by 1982's “I Love a Man in a Uniform”, their political edge was sharp as ever. After a series of breakups and shakeups, guitarist Andy Gill was the last original member standing on 2015's What Happens Next, which enlisted The Kills' Alison Mosshart for the frisky funk of “Broken Talk”.
