Free refined rock music to its raw fundamentals, just as it turned progressive at the turn of the ‘70s. They created a soulful and supple blues-based rock using power-trio dynamics behind the honeyed gravel of Paul Rodgers' voice—harsh and critical in “Wishing Well,” warm and affectionate in “My Brother Jake.” The supremely funky rhythm section gave Paul Kossoff's biting guitar riffs (“Fire and Water”) a sense of drama and fluidity, creating a muscular and solid wall of funk on “The Stealer” or holding everything back for the chorus in the sublime “All Right Now.”
