Francesco De Gregori, known in his native Italy as the “prince of singer/songwriters”, began his distinguished career singing American folk standards he'd translated into Italian. His fourth album, 1975's Rimmel, was his breakthrough, spawning several Italian pop classics that married poetry and politics. He went on to hone his folk rock sound and cement his burgeoning artistic reputation. Known for his elegant lyrics, De Gregori has never lost sight of the American artists who influenced his music—he released an album of translated Bob Dylan songs in 2015.
