If Nirvana’s thundering “Smells Like Teen Spirit” drum attack were the only thing Dave Grohl played in his career, he would still be considered a legend. However, the affable musician wasn’t content with merely bringing viscous grooves and hardcore punk fury to ’90s alternative music. As the founder, guitarist and vocal shredder for Foo Fighters, Grohl has penned album after album full of melodic songs with arena-brawny riffs. For good measure, he also drummed on Queens of the Stone Age’s 2002 breakthrough, Songs for the Deaf—and, in 2021, teamed up with the next Grohl generation, daughter Violet, for a raucous cover of X’s “Nausea”.
