Charlie Hunter Essentials

Charlie Hunter is one of jazz's most idiosyncratic guitarists and bandleaders. The nimble picker plays both melodies and basslines, utilising seven- and eight-stringed guitars, and gives pieces like his 1997 reimagining of “Natty Dread” a bluesy and uniquely supple swing. Often, his guitar doesn't even sound like one; on the jumpy, Latin-kissed “Mestre Tata”, his warm, playful stabs echo the phrasing of a funk organ. He also makes a daring choice in covers, transforming Nirvana's “Come As You Are” into loping acid jazz riddled with darkly hued horns.
