They are uplifting and obtuse incantations; her self-possessed voice and choirboy harmonies ride wayward melodies that pull her unvarnished, needle-prick guitar chords in unexpected directions. Whether sung in her native Welsh or in English, there's always a joyful otherness to her work, as if The Velvet Underground had found a hidden cache of slightly nervous Brian Wilson tunes and brought in Bobbie Gentry to help sing them back to life.
