Belgian legend Arno was originally lead singer of beloved ‘80s New Wave band TC Matic, so it was little surprise his self-titled solo debut, released in 1986, was a great success. His vocals, in a variety of Belgian languages, are reminiscent of Tom Waits and Serge Gainsbourg—all gravelly bass and rock ‘n' roll attitude. Arno brings a dramatic sense of darkness to his subject matter, such as in the ‘80s cowboy ballad “Lonesome Zorro” with its gospel backing vocals. He is also known for choice covers: his version of Jacques Brel's “Le Bon Dieu” features ominous drums and meandering accordion.
