When it comes to the studio work of London dance-music icon Andrew Weatherall, it’s hard to know where a remix ends and a new production begins; for all intents and purposes, he seemingly saw the two disciplines as one and the same. Primal Scream’s “Loaded” is, on paper, a Weatherall remix of their earlier song “I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have”, but listen to the two tracks side by side and it’s obvious that the former is entirely its own creation. What’s more, the LP it’s found on, 1991’s Screamadelica, basically transformed the scrappy Glasgow psych-blues rockers into indie-dance legends—not bad for Weatherall’s first time working in a proper studio. Weatherall, who died on February 17, 2020, had already established himself as a particularly eclectic DJ within London’s burgeoning acid-house scene, and he brought those dance-floor instincts to so many of the records he made with other artists. Not that Madchester kingpins Happy Mondays or synth-pop progenitors New Order were strangers to making bodies move, but the touches Weatherall put on his mixes of “Hallelujah” and “World in Motion” elevated the tracks to club anthem status. Still, the beats he used to propel so many of his classic tracks could never mask his subtle strengths. The elegant flourishes he gave Beth Orton’s Trailer Park LP helped codify the folktronica sound of the mid-’90s, and in the 2000s, he provided shape and structure to the noisier sides of artists such as Fuck Buttons and The Twilight Sad.
