About Fanfare Ciocărlia

Bringing the gypsy brass band tradition into the 21st century, the Romanian ensemble Fanfare Ciocarlia were performing in their native land for years before being discovered by the world at large in the late 1990s. Fanfare's music is a rousing, boisterous blend of horns, percussion, and vocals that pulls from a wide variety of ethnic styles that together represent the breadth of the Roma diaspora. In the early 2000s, there was a boom of interest in gypsy music in the West (thanks in part to a number of indie-rock bands that began utilizing elements of the style), providing Fanfare Ciocarlia with yet another opportunity to bring their music to a new audience. However, the band is perhaps best known to popular audiences for their version of "Born to Be Wild" from the 2006 BORAT movie.
