The Spinners Essentials

The Spinners are one of few Detroit soul groups who truly found their groove by leaving Motown. On that label they hit with Stevie Wonder's "It's a Shame", but it took a hook-up with Philadelphia maestro Thom Bell to bring out their best. Bell's smooth and sumptuous productions were the blueprint for Philly soul, and the Spinners' Philippe Wynne had the creamy voice to match. Lightly funkified love ballads became their trademark, but they could also draw from gospel on "Mighty Love" and do social comment on "Ghetto Child". You missed the '70s if you didn't slow dance to one of their hits.
