The French Horn

The French Horn

The French horn—whose origins date back to instruments made from animals’ horns, and then to sound hunting calls—became a noble instrument in its classical guise. Schumann called the French horn the soul of the symphony orchestra, and it’s hard to disagree (check out his Konzertstück for Four Horns and Orchestra for a truly magnificent example). Whether playing a supportive harmonic role, calling out big tunes or taking on soft solos, the French horn produces a sound that’s always memorable—something Hollywood has never forgotten.
