The Breeders Essentials

In the Pixies, bassist Kim Deal provided the sassy, perma-smile antidote to Black Francis' feral shrieks. Upon teaming up with twin sister Kelley for their concurrent band, The Breeders, Kim retained her affinity for sun-beamed melodies but cast them in a uniquely surreal sound world, bounding through deliriously funky noise pop (“Cannonball”) and tiki-torched surfgaze (“No Aloha”) on the 1993 alterna-nation touchstone Last Splash. After a nine-year hiatus, The Breeders' sporadic 21st-century releases have showcased their unyielding zeal for frazzled rave-ups (“Wait in the Car”) and disquieting balladry (“Off You”) alike.
