Roland Kirk: The Session Musicians

Roland Kirk: The Session Musicians

Composer Charles Mingus demanded precision work from his musicians, though he also wanted them to leave their own imprints on a song. During “Ecclusiastics”, Kirk contributed wailing saxophone textures that deepen the track's gospel-like fervour, while on pieces requiring a lighter footprint—such as Quincy Jones' “Whipping Boy”—he showed a talent for soft flute dynamics that still communicate an intense blues feeling.
