Polaris Essentials

Formed in 2001, the mellow indie-rock of Polaris owes much to Ohya Yusuke's trebly, soothing-yet-sad voice. His free-floating delivery matches well with co-songwriter and bassist Yuzuru Kashiwabara's shuffling melodic grooves, which encompass elements of post-rock, lo-fi and wintry dream pop. On tracks such as "Lemon", the band keeps a brisk rhythmic pace, melding light guitar notes and atmospheric violin strings over a skipping drum beat, even as Yusuke sings with a placidity that suggests deep melancholy.
