Matthieu Chedid set up his superhero alter-ego M in the ‘90s as a way to reanimate the heroic swagger of ‘70s rock—particularly self-made myths like David Bowie—and to overcome stage fright. Freed of self-consciousness, he let his imagination run riot, composing swinging Queen-ish rock (“Qui de nous deux”), riffy new wave (“Mojo”), Black Eyed Peas-style pop rap (“You Wanna Luv Me”), chattery spook disco (“Machistador”) and even a punk funk song about breakfast cereal (“Le complexe du corn flakes”).
