Lang Lang & Gina Alice’s Chinese New Year Playlist

“I hope everyone can be joyful and well,” Lang Lang tells Apple Music, looking ahead to the new year. “When you’re anxious or in a bad mood, listen to my Goldberg Variations, or Gina’s Wonderworld, slow your life down, and be healthier.” The virtuosic pianist power couple that is Lang Lang and Gina Alice Redlinger have selected an eclectic mix of Western and Chinese classical music and C-pop in this playlist, which aims to help us wind down and get ready for a fresh start. “For us, ‘An der schönen blauen Donau’—which gets played every year on Vienna New Year's concerts—is of course the best piece for ringing in the new year,” Lang says. “And the work of contemporary piano masters, like Pollini, Barenboim, Argerich, are still our favourites. These classical virtuosos are not only beyond comparison in their brilliance, they also never stop providing us with musical enlightenment and inspiration.” Still, it wouldn’t be Chinese New Year without Chinese orchestral works and C-pop. “We chose ‘The Spring Festival Prelude’, ‘Silver Clouds Chasing the Moon’ and ‘The Merry Shepherd Boy’ as these are pieces that can really show off the Chinese style,” Lang says. “We also chose Jay Chou, Chen Linong and other affectionate crooners like them to share with everyone the fruitful feelings of the year gone by.” “I was able to accomplish a major milestone,” Redlinger says, reflecting on the year that was. “Namely, the release of my first solo piano album, Wonderworld. But, of course, the thing I’m most thankful for is the birth of our son. The love I feel for him, and the joy he’s brought to our household, is something I’m very grateful for.” With this in mind, the couple have prepared a unique “red envelope” for children specifically. “You must have some dumplings in the new year,” Lang adds. “That’s a very important tradition for our family. And our son’s birthday is very close to this Chinese New Year’s Eve, so we’re going to celebrate both occasions together. I also wish that in the new year we can donate more to building music classrooms, not only across China, but for children around the world.”
