Jayne County Essentials

Punk icon Jayne County is most widely known as one of rock’s first transgender performers. Wayne County (born Wayne Rogers in Georgia in 1947) moved to New York in 1968 and became involved with Andy Warhol’s Factory as an actor. In the first half of the ’70s, County fronted the bands Queen Elizabeth and Wayne County & The Backstreet Boys. The latter played CGBG and Max’s Kansas City during the blossoming of NYC punk; the group’s raw sound mixed garage rock with a New York Dolls-like feel, while County’s elaborate stage presence (including dresses, wigs and makeup) and graphically sexual lyrics earned considerable attention. County moved to England in 1977, forming Wayne County & The Electric Chairs, whose early recordings became highly influential without making any commercial headway. By decade’s end, Wayne had become Jayne and would release several solo albums in the ’80s and ’90s, later fronting a series of bands as well as publishing an autobiography and working in visual art.
