Hugues Aufray Essentials

Hugues Aufray Essentials

After immersing himself in the early '60s East Village folk scene as a tourist, a young Hugues Aufray brought it all back home to France and refashioned himself as a rugged raconteur. With his flair for furiously strummed, raspy-voiced serenades, Aufray soon developed a reputation as France's answer to Bob Dylan, a comparison he didn't exactly discourage—he's recorded full-album, francophone covers of Dylan's repertoire. But over the next half-century, Aufray established a style all his own, complementing his rich narrative detail with a cinematic, lushly orchestrated musical sensibility.
