Folk-pop artist Amélie Beyries can shatter a heart with a murmured lyric, or set off a joy explosion with the climb and fall of a muted melody. Though her Montreal childhood was filled with music, the bilingual singer/songwriter came to performing in her late 30s; the slings and arrows of a lived-in life add substance to her songs. On the waltz-time stagger “Out of Touch”, her mournful cries—”I can’t help myself!”—run the emotional gamut as swooning strings swirl in the background. A delicate acoustic tune like “Nous Sommes” has the timeless resonance of a classic folk ballad; the deep soul on “To Love Somebody” is hard-won.
