Beyond: Deep Cuts

Adding progressive and alternative rock influences to the Cantopop template since their emergence in the mid-'80s, the Hong Kong quartet Beyond became one of the genre's most successful acts. Known primarily for combining toe-tapping ballads with energetic guitar licks, they excavated experimental areas both before and after Wong Ka Kui's untimely death, with offbeat reggae and echoey hard rock.
