Bergen, Norway’s Abbath are committed to modernising black metal’s traditional doom-laden signifiers. Founded in 2015 by guitarist-vocalist Abbath Doom Occulta upon his departure from Immortal, the group pair growling, gravel-toned vocals with vital, thrashing tempos and riffs on songs such as “Acid Haze” and “Harvest Pyre”. On other tracks, Abbath deepen the emotional impact of their music by employing stripped-down acoustic riffs or droning instrumental passages. None of these flourishes detract from the band’s metal bona fides, however; if anything, they amplify the pulverising riffage of “Sons of Northern Darkness” and the breakneck speeds of the thundering “To War”.
