About Soft Plastics

Soft Plastics are a versatile Canadian indie rock trio formed by Carey Mercer in the wake of the dissolution of his previous band, the nervy, post-punk/art-rock collective Frog Eyes. After Frog Eyes ceased operations in 2018, following a prolific, nearly 20-year run, Mercer assembled Soft Plastics with former Frog Eyes members Melanie Campbell (drums) and Shyla Seller (keyboards). Embracing the latter group's carnivalesque blend of disjointed pop and jittery psych-punk, the newly minted trio added a typically esoteric gumbo of genres into the hopper (new wave, mariachi, dub, hip-hop, and goth rock) and headed into the studio. Three singles -- "Here's Where the Sun Was," "The Party's Still On," and "Wyld Thyng" -- arrived in early 2020, all of which appeared on the band's debut album, Five Dreams, which was released later that June. ~ James Christopher Monger
