About Pinetop Perkins
Prominent in the development of a modern boogie woogie style, pianist Pinetop Perkins accompanied Big Joe Williams, Robert Nighthawk, and Sonny Boy Williamson (I). He also recorded a celebrated version of Pinetop Smith's "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie" in 1953, leading many to mistakenly attribute the original composition to him (Perkins acquired his nickname from the tune). In Chicago, he took over the piano chair from Otis Spann in Muddy Water's band in 1969. Perkins released contemporary blues albums into the 2000s, in 2010 collaborating with Willie "Big Eyes" Smith for Joined at the Hip, which won a Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album. On March 21, 2011, Perkins died from a heart attack at age 97 at his home in Austin, Texas.
