Essential Albums
- Few composers can turn an energetic film into a blisteringly high-octane one quite like Anirudh Ravichander. The composer has become a go-to for creating powerful, stirring soundtracks that take films to spirited new heights. He proves how he’s earned his “maestro” stripes with Devara Part 1, a Telugu-language action extravaganza. Joined by lyricist Ramajogayya Sastry and some of the country’s most exciting singers, he crafts tracks that evoke drama and passion in spades. Thrilling opener “Fear Song” has to be the highlight, with its heavy rock and electronic music influences.
- From the opening rumble on riff-heavy “Bloody Sweet” to the final victorious chant on club-ready belter “Lokiverse 2.0”, the soundtrack to Tamil action-thriller Leo revels in drama, energy and pomp—much like the film itself. Rock is the order of the day for the record’s singer/composer Anirudh Ravichander but there’s also dance and balladry here. He goes for atmosphere with the ominous “Glimpse of Antony Das” and calls on singer-songwriter Lothika for the drifting, piano-laced “Anbenum”. But perhaps the biggest song here is “Badass”, with its relentlessly driving drums that just make you want to be a rebel.
- Composer and singer Anirudh Ravichander brings the right amount of oomph, adrenaline and soul for Tamil action thriller Vikram’s soundtrack—a sublime combo of cinematic rock, pop and electronic sounds. Although he provides his own vocals on all five tracks, the rhythmically rich opener “Pathala Pathala” is carried by actor Kamal Haasan’s inimitable voice. Stirring ballad “Porkanda Singam” ropes in Ravi G in a similar role, while “Wasted”, “Once Upon a Time” and the title track are charged by gritty, grandiose electro-rock.
- The OST for star-studded Tamil thriller Master lives up to the film’s power-packed energy. Right from the firecracker drum work that kicks off “Vaathi Coming”, composer Anirudh Ravichander unleashes a riotous sound. “Andha Kanna Paathaakaa”—a team-up with musical heavyweight Yuvan Shankar Raja—matches a tropical tune with cheeky but heartfelt Tamil lyrics. The movie’s star Vijay gets on the mic for the comedic “Kutti Story” that floats atop rubbery folk beats. And on the ferocious “Vaathi Raid”, firebrand rapper Arivu brings a sharpened edge.
- Superstar composer Anirudh Ravichander’s Tollywood debut kicks off with “Dhaga Dhagamaney”, complete with riotous, massive electric guitar solos. Anirudh even gets behind the mic himself for “Gaali Vaaluga”, delivering a Spanish-influenced melody that captures young love. And there’s even a soothing devotional touch with the beautiful soft-rock rendition of “Swagatham Krishna” to complete the mix.
